direct marketing

Companies are always searching for direct marketing solutions that help to grow their business without spending big bucks. Direct marketing allows you to speak directly with your customer, and can be a cost-effective and well-targeted method of getting your message across.

Direct marketing is both trackable and measurable.

At Orient Design, we seek to understand your needs and provide customised solutions. When it comes to direct mail marketing, we work with you to market your products and services to potential clients through mail sent directly to them that are personalised, and generate effective call-to-action.

Below are case studies of Orient Design-inspired direct marketing targeted at getting consumer buy-in and attention.

direct mailer design for old chang kee Old Chang Kee (OCK) is a popular snack chain in Singapore which offers a wide variety of finger food catered to local tastes. They commissioned us to design a direct mailer to commemorate the Lunar New Year and launch of OCK’s delivery service. The end product was a pop-up card depicting their Director on a delivery errand. The phrase “Rich Your Doorstep” served to convey a double meaning: an efficient delivery system, coupled with wealth and prosperity for the Lunar New Year.

press kit design for evian Part of the Danone Group, Evian is one of the leading brands of premium mineral water. Evian is known for its understated class, style and purity, so we kept to these elements when conceptualising their press kit. Aside from being aesthetically appealing, we took care in making it functional. The creation of a box-like kit ensured that the contents –Evian bottle, product CD and leaflet – could be nicely stored and protected.

press kit design for volvic Also part of the Danone Group, Volvic is an international brand of mineral water which originates from a volcanic spring. The Volvic Touch of Fruit range is a unique blend of mineral water and fruity flavours. To convey this, we produced images of fruits splashing into water. This not only reflected the brand’s fruity flavours, but also served to create a refreshing feel, in line with the brand image.

direct mailer design - mi tong package from orient design for the lunar new year Orient Design wanted to take packaging into an inspired level. A good package should fulfil more than its basic functions; it should trigger the target market’s cultural cues to evoke a response. We conceptualised a mi tong (Chinese for rice bucket) package, which is rendered in lightweight folding cardboard, drawing inspiration from a traditional Chinese wooden rice bucket. Traditionally, the rice bucket is an auspicious item, as rice signifies prosperity to the Chinese. We distributed our very own mi tong to our business associates, and received overwhelming positive response.

direct mailer design for the dumpling festival, from orient design Traditionally, duan wu jie commemorates the death of renowned Chinese poet Qu Yuan. To get in the spirit of duan we jie (Chinese for dumpling festival), we designed a package to contain zong zi –sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves – and presented them out to our business associates. The slits at the corners of the package served to provide ventilation. Images depicting the celebration of the dumpling festival were printed on both sides. These were inspired by the paintings of Chinese farmers, which were known for their colourful and child-like drawing styles. A card in the shape of a bamboo leaf was attached for personalisation.

direct mailer design for go green name card Holder, from orient design We wanted to design a package which would be interesting and useful for our clients – something which people could keep; unlike a flyer, which is usually thrown away. We came up with the idea of a name card holder, with dividers to showcase our portfolio of clients in alphabetical order. Made from foldable cardboard, the name card holder also serves to reinforce a Go Green message, a cause which Orient Design believes in. At the same time, green is a gender-neutral colour which also serves to brighten up one’s workspace. The name card holder proved to be a popular corporate gift among our Clients, and is also available for personalised corporate adaptation.

Why Packaging Design Matters

We are often told not to judge a book by its cover. But the fact is, most of us DO judge a book by its cover, and this is exactly why the packaging of products is so important. What is the look and feel of the packaging? What impressions does it convey to people? Why would people want to buy it, or even pick it up?

Yes, visual appearance does matter a great deal. In fact, the packaging is not just an important sales tool to attract customers’ attention, it also carries the brand image. Packaging design is the ultimate touch point for consumer product brands. The packaging designer is also an image maker who can give your brand performance a much desired boost.

A company that sells its brand is primed for success. It has been quite a while since people stopped selling shoes as shoes, beer as beer, or food as food. In this age where consumerism thrives, companies need to sell their brands to stand out from a clutter of similar products being pushed in front of them every day.

Another aspect that is often overlooked in the marketing mix is public relations. Using public relations effectively can enhance your marketing efforts to create the unique brand identity you desire.

This workshop conducted by experienced designers and branding experts will teach you practical applications and considerations for product packaging design, as well as how a good branding strategy can help your product stay on top.

"His profession approach to the whole exercise left and indelible impression on me. He changed the way we thought about not just packaging, but te whole design business in general."
